I recently saw an interview with Matthew Goode about his take on the character of Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt. He's invented his own interesting back story about Veidt to help him get a handle on the character.
His interpretation is that Veidt's parents were Nazis and Veidt himself was born in Nazi Germany. Goode has given his character an on-and-off German accent (something that wasn't in the book). He speaks perfect English in public but in private, his natural German accent slips out. This is a unique take on the character which he came up with all on his own.
Some people have a problem with it since this wasn't in the graphic novel. In the book, Veidt says he was born in the USA in 1939, shortly after his parents arrived there. They escaped the 3rd Reich. So it does contradict Moore's conception of the character, but its a minor thing.
It doesn't really bother me since its not in the actual script and there will be no mention of it in the film. Its just something Goode came up with to flesh out the character. Other actors have similar techniques to help them realize a character. Meryl Streep says she likes to give all her characters a hidden secret thats never revealed. So its a normal actors method to add imaginary layers to a character that aren't in the script.
So how will this play out on screen? Will purists accept Veidt with a German accent? Will it be a distracting character trait? I'm curious to see how it will play out.

It certainly would affect the film and the character. But this is not Moore's Watchmen, just like The Lord of the Rings on film was Jackson's, not Tolkien's. SUre, this will cause problems for anyone with expectations set high.
Is he definitely going to have an accent?

Well, according to Goode he will. He said it at comic-con. I watched the interview on Youtube.
But as you say, this is Snyder's "Watchmen" not Moore's. So there are bound to be lots of little changes.
