I recently watched this movie, and it was amazing.
Jack Nicholson stars as The Joker, and, in my honest opinion, I liked his performance far more than Ledger's. Not saying Ledger's performance wasn't amazing.
Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne was also tremendous. I really liked his performance as well.
Awesome movie.
Discuss.

I liked this film a lot, too. At the time, Michael Keaton wasn't known as a serious actor and there was considerable uproar when he was cast, but he surprised a many people with his strong performance.
Jack Nicholson is, of course, a living legend and one of the finest actors of the latter half of the 20th century. His version of the Joker was hilarious. After seeing this movie when it first came out, my best friend and I kept saying to each other "You are my number one guy!" for months.
Kim Bassinger made for a gorgeous love interest, infinitely more attractive than either Katie Holmes or Maggie Gyllenhall. And she had much better chemistry with Keaton than Holmes or Gyllenhall had with Bale.
It was strange that the '89 film introduces Billie Dee Williams as Harvey Dent and then forgot about the character in the second film, then brought him back in the third film, played by a different actor (not even the same color) Tommy Lee Jones.
The new films have their merit, too. Gary Oldman made a far better Commissioner Gordon than Pat Hingle did. I felt Gordon was a wasted character in the Tim Burton 'Batman" film and the three sequels. He never seemed to do anything. Oldman made Gordon more interesting, dynamic and useful.
And I was surprised at how good Heath Ledger was as the Joker. Clearly, he was not the same caliber of actor as the great Nicholson is, but I have to say that Ledger probably did the finest ever interpretation of the Joker. I'm surprised to hear myself say that, since I never thought much of Ledger as an actor overall and Nicholson is an acting legend. But I really feel Ledger's interpretation was more serious and menacing, whereas Nicholson focused on the comic aspects of the character (as most people do when they write or portray the Joker. ) I was glad to see someone bring the Joker back to his menacing roots. Kudos to the late Ledger for making the Joker scary again.
I'm not sure which Batman I like Better, Keaton or Bale. Keaton was great in the part, but Bale keeps the role of Bruce Wayne more in keeping with his comic counterpart. Both did a very good job.

I agree, Nicholson was more comic in terms of his Joker interpretation, whereas Ledger was more dark and scary. I believe, in their own ways, they both stole the show. I think I liked Nicholson's a minute amount better than Ledger's because that's how I've always seen The Joker, always laughing and dark in his humor. Ledger, though, I have to hand it to him. He played a great part, and I think this was one of the best acting in past years.
As for Oldman vs. Hingle, I think that Hingle's Gordon was never meant to be a big character, but Oldman's Gordon got the attention it deserved. Any way you turn it though, Oldman was far better.
I think Bale and Keaton played their parts their own, so they both did really well. I couldn't say who I liked better.
Finally, I really liked Alfred in Batman, rather than in Begins and TDK. He had a smaller part, but I really liked him in it.
